Netflix Just Pulled Off a Major Heist: The Zelda Movie is Streaming Exclusively

In a move that will have every other streaming service green with envy, Netflix has secured the holy grail: exclusive global streaming rights for the live-action The Legend of Zelda movie. Mark your calendars, because after its theatrical run and home release, Hyrule is officially moving to Netflix.

Let’s be real: when this film was announced back in November 2023, the collective question from fans wasn’t just “who will play Link?” but “where can I watch this a thousand times?” Now we have an answer. The movie, still shrou in delicious mystery ahead of its May 7, 2027 cinema debut, will eventually find its permanent home on the world’s biggest streaming platform. Sure, we’ve glimpsed Benjamin Evan Ainsworth and Bo Bragason suited up as the legendary hero and princess, but the real treasure was the distribution deal all along.

This isn’t just a one-off grab for a hot property. Netflix’s coup is part of a massive, groundbreaking deal with Sony Pictures Entertainment—a “first of its kind” global agreement that effectively makes Netflix the post-theatrical destination for Sony’s entire cinematic slate. While similar deals existed in places like the U.S. and Germany, this new pact blows the doors wide open for every Netflix region.

Think about what that means. We’re not just talking about Link’s adventure. The final chapter of the Spider-Verse trilogy, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, is also in this bundle. Netflix is assembling a cinematic universe of its own, but with other studios’ crown jewels.

“The new global Pay-1 arrangement will roll out gradually starting later this year… with full global availability on Netflix in early 2029,” stated Sony Pictures. The deal also includes a treasure trove of legacy titles from Sony’s library.

The implications are huge. Directed by Wes Ball (Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes) and penned by Derek Connolly (Jurassic World), with Shigeru Miyamoto and Avi Arad producing, The Legend of Zelda was already one of the most anticipated films of the decade. Now, its long-term legacy is tied to the Netflix logo. For gamers and cinephiles, the message is clear: if you want to revisit Hyrule after 2027, you know where to go. Checkmate, other streamers.
