Gotham’s Got a Traffic Jam: James Gunn Pumps the Brakes on ‘Brave and the Bold’ News

If you were hoping for a fresh update on the DCU’s upcoming Batman flick, ‘The Brave and the Bold,’ you might want to get comfortable. According to DC Studios co-head James Gunn, the Bat-Signal for that project won’t be lit until well after Robert Pattinson’s sequel has had its moment in the spotlight.

Let’s be real, keeping track of cinematic Batmen is becoming a full-time job. In one corner, we have Matt Reeves’ critically acclaimed The Batman universe, a gritty, grounded “Epic Crime Saga” that’s charging ahead toward a trilogy. Its next chapter, The Batman Part II starring Pattinson, is firmly on the calendar for an October 1, 2027 release.

And in the other corner? That’s the brand-new, interconnected DC Universe (DCU) being built by James Gunn and Peter Safran. Its cornerstone Batman project is The Brave and the Bold, which promises to introduce a completely new actor under the cowl and, excitingly, bring the Damian Wayne version of Robin into live-action. Gunn has been crystal clear: there will be no crossover between Pattinson’s Gotham and the DCU’s. So yes, we’re officially heading into an era of two simultaneous, unrelated Batmen. Comic book multiverse logic is now just… standard operating procedure.

So, when’s the big update on this other Bat-project? Fans recently pressed Gunn on social media, and his response was a masterclass in managing expectations—and frankly, it makes perfect sense from a studio head’s perspective.

“I’m dependent on when there’s an actionable script ready so there is no way of me guessing this,” Gunn stated. “Also, frankly, we’re well into Batman 2, and I wouldn’t want to cloud the Batsphere until after that.”

Translation: Don’t hold your breath. With Reeves’ film not hitting theaters until late 2027, Gunn is essentially putting a moratorium on major Brave and the Bold news until sometime in 2028. He wants Pattinson’s sequel to have all the oxygen in the room, free from competing headlines about a different Dark Knight.

But Gunn didn’t stop there. In a follow-up, he laid down a cardinal rule for the new DCU era: no doubling up on the Caped Crusader. When asked about balancing projects like Batman and Wonder Woman, he affirmed, “I think both Batman and WW are incredibly important. But I’m also not going to have two Batman movies come out in the same year.”

It’s a smart, if frustrating, strategy. It prevents audience fatigue and gives each iteration its due. But for fans eager to see the DCU’s take on the Batman family, it means an exercise in serious patience. The message from DC Studios is clear: one Bat at a time. For now, all eyes are on Reeves and Pattinson. The Batsphere, it seems, only has room for one major storm at a time.
