A Sci-Fi Cult Classic is Getting a Reboot, Helmed by ‘The Last of Us’ Emmy Nominee

Get ready, sci-fi fans. A beloved piece of British television history is being pulled out of cryo-freeze. Peter Hoar, the director behind the heart-wrenching “Long, Long Time” episode of HBO’s The Last of Us, is setting his sights on a new galaxy: he’s leading a reboot of the seminal 1970s series, Blake’s 7.

This isn’t just another nostalgia cash-grab. Hoar is launching the project through his newly formed production company, Multitude Productions, alongside partners Jason Haigh-Ellery and A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder executive Matthew Bouch. Their mission? To resurrect the gritty, politically charged saga for a modern audience.

The original show, a brainchild of Doctor Who Dalek-creator Terry Nation, was a product of its time in the best way. It followed a band of ragtag rebels—led by political dissident Roj Blake—battling the oppressive Terran Federation across a bleak, low-budget cosmos. It was scrappy, smart, and surprisingly dark for its era, earning a fiercely loyal cult following that has lasted decades.

So, where will this new vision land? The team is currently shopping the project, with Bouch expressing a sentimental hope to bring it home to the BBC, the network that first aired it over 40 years ago. But let’s be real—in today’s streaming wars, the big money talks. The production is expected to seek financial backing from deep-pocketed American streamers and European studios, a far cry from the shoestring budget of the original.

And what can we expect from the tone? Hoar isn’t chasing the flashy, CGI-soaked spectacle of modern blockbusters. In a telling statement, he drew a direct comparison to Disney+’s Andor. Not for its budget, but for its “integrity, wit and sophistication.” He’s aiming for that same brand of grounded, character-driven political thriller, just set in Blake’s 7‘s dystopian universe.

Hoar even tipped his hat to the original’s constraints, noting it was made with a “police drama” budget. “Those shows got into my veins,” he said. “I could tell they didn’t have money but I was able to compartmentalize…” This suggests a director who respects the soul of the material, not just its name recognition.

With Hoar’s proven skill in crafting emotionally resonant genre stories and a clear, thoughtful vision for the reboot, this project is suddenly one of the most intriguing revivals on the horizon. The rebellion is getting a major upgrade.
